Rock climbing at the TAUERN SPA

Located in the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park, overlooked by the mighty Kitzsteinhorn peak topping out at 2,500 metres, the TAUERN SPA is the ideal base to explore the rugged landscape of the Austrian Alps. Experienced mountaineers can venture onto the glacier, while rock climbers will enjoy the via ferrata on the dam wall. On wet-weather days there is the indoor climbing wall at the Club Kitzsteinhorn in Zell am See. Whatever kind of climber you are, the 4*S resort TAUERN SPA in Zell am See - Kaprun is an ideal starting point from which to scale the heights.

Alpine mountaineering

The TAUERN SPA is a good starting point not only for walks and hikes but also for more ambitious adventures such as mountaineering expeditions onto the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier and climbs up the hair-raising route along the almost vertical dam wall above Kaprun. Rock climbers will enjoy the routes at Rettenwand and Gletscherseeplatten, while fans of what are known as 'via ferrata' (fixed-rope climbing routes with iron handholds and footholds anchored into the rock) will find a number to choose from at the Klettersteigarena Höhenburg. One thing all these many options have in common are fine views across the mountains and valleys of the Salzburger Land region.

Three top tips for rock climbing

Visitors to the TAUERN SPA keen to climb whatever the season will find indoor and outdoor options 365 days a year.
Kitzsteinhorn
Good climbing can be found at the Rettenwand and Gletscherseeplatten
Kaprun dam wall
The Klettersteigarena Höhenburg and Staumauer Mooserboden both have via ferrata climbing routes
Club Kitzsteinhorn
Indoor climbing centre with 1,200 ² climbing wall and 350m² bouldering area as well as high-rope obstacle course

High climbing with extra safety

Via ferrata climbing routes offer an ideal mix of adrenaline and security. Climbers are strapped into a harness attached to a rope running from start to finish. In many cases there are also iron handholds and footholds anchored into the rock to help climbers. There are several such climbing routes in and around Kaprun, including a particularly thrilling one leading up the almost vertical dam wall at the Hochgebirgsstauseen Kaprun. The highest via ferrata of its kind in the world, it is a real adrenaline kick even for experienced climbers. Guides are on hand to show you the way up the 240 vertical metres from bottom to top. The experience lasts around 20-50 minutes but will leave you with memories for a lifetime.
